Words by David from DAH Architecture

Why did you choose architecture as a career?

Through school I studied a lot of Mathematics and really enjoyed graphics and manual arts and thought I would go on to be an engineer. I feel like personally I hit that saturation point with Mathematics and so decided Architecture might be a more interesting career to pursue. My dad was an electrician and I enjoyed working on construction sites with him as well. Ultimately, I love meeting new people and problem solving which Architecture provides ample opportunity for.

Where was your first architecture/design job?

My first architectural job was at Kevin Hayes Architects in New Farm, archiving old files in the back storeroom. That job quickly developed in to working on a variety of multi-res projects throughout SEQ. I stayed there for nearly a decade before starting DAHA when some great opportunities arose.

Best piece of advice you could give to job seekers who are currently looking / applying for roles?

Take whatever experience you can get in an architecture office, no matter what the role if you apply yourself to the tasks and are willing to learn better opportunities will present themselves, or you will have a better chance getting future job with architectural office experience under your belt. Also be social and personable, first point of call for hiring for us is always word of mouth/recommendations from staff/friends.

The biggest mistake you see applicants make with their job applications?

Applicants seem to write what they think the employer wants to see which relies on a lot of assumptions. I feel if you are honest in your application you will end up landing a job that’s a great fit for you and ultimately you will enjoy your time there as a result.
