Settled within the vibrant neighbourhood of Chippendale in central Sydney, OTC Terrace House exudes an enchanting blend of heritage charm and contemporary allure. This remarkable transformation by Marker Architecture & Design pays homage to the area's industrial past that once fuelled the docks, brewing, and textile industries. With a layout and ambiance reminiscent of a bygone era, this hundred and twenty-year-old terrace house presented Marker Architecture with a unique challenge, to create a home that perfectly aligns with the tastes and lifestyle of its young family while harmonising with the vibrancy of the newly revitalised suburb.
At the heart of this project lies the desire to flood the living areas with natural light and amplify the sense of openness. Marker Architecture ingeniously achieved this by incorporating expansive blackbutt timber doors that gracefully unfold, effortlessly blending the interior with the exterior. The resulting synergy between the indoor and outdoor spaces not only accentuates the abundant natural light but also creates an unparalleled feeling of expansiveness. By extending finishes and utilising floating joinery, the architects seamlessly expand the boundaries of the home, inviting the surrounding environment to become an integral part of the living experience.
Marker Architecture's innovative design solutions elevate the functionality and adaptability of OTC Terrace House. A kitchen island mounted on castors provides the freedom to effortlessly transform the space for various entertaining needs. Additionally, a cleverly designed storage loft above the bathroom and laundry offers a practical solution to accommodate bulky items without encroaching on valuable floor space. These thoughtful details underscore the architects' meticulous attention to detail and their commitment to creating a home that seamlessly integrates convenience with aesthetics.
The design narrative of OTC Terrace House harmoniously blends traditional terrace features with contemporary elements, striking a visually captivating balance between the past and the present. Marker Architecture's skilfully juxtaposed the ornate original terrace with the new interiors, showcasing soaring ceilings and carefully selected materials reminiscent of Chippendale's industrial heritage, such as plywood, stainless steel, exposed brickwork, and welded metal. The juxtaposition of the original decorative terrace with these modern additions creates a captivating dialogue, embodying the essence of Chippendale's transformative journey. A layer of recycled Carrara marble aggregate gracefully crowns the exposed concrete floors, infusing the space with an urban and luxurious touch.
