1.Know what you want

Before you start your job search, take some time to reflect on your career goals and what you're looking for in a job. You might be interested in a smaller studio working closely with a client on residential projects or prefer a larger national practice where you work on complex commercial projects in a large team.  No matter the preference, this decision will help you narrow down your search and focus on the roles and studios that align with your passions and interests.

2.Tailor your CO-profile

Your CO-profile is often the first impression that potential employers will have of you. Make sure it's tailored to the job you're applying for and highlights your relevant skills and experiences that may suit that role.

Be sure to use every section of your CO-profile so that the studio you are applying for has a great understanding of all of your skills and achievements.

We like to say, treat your About section like a first introduction with your potential future employer. Give them an understanding of who you are as a person, what interests you, your strengths and capabilities and why you would be a great fit for their office.

3.Network

Networking is crucial in today's job market. This can be by either attending events or connecting with people on social media.

You likely have a few favourite studios whose work you admire. While it's tempting to simply appreciate their designs from afar, there are a number of reasons why interacting with these studios can be beneficial. Firstly, interacting with architecture studios whose work you like can deepen your understanding and appreciation of their projects. By following their social media accounts or attending their events, you can learn more about their design philosophies, creative processes, and the projects they're currently working on. This can help when applying for a role when an opportunity becomes available as you will be able to delve deeply into their work and why you think you'd be a great fit. Studios love when you have taken time to research them and appreciate their work.

Additionally, interacting with architecture studios you like can be an incredibly rewarding experience in and of itself. By connecting with like-minded individuals who share your passion for architecture, you can build a community of fellow enthusiasts and creatives. This can lead to new friendships, collaborations, and opportunities to work on exciting new projects.

4.Practice your interview skills

An interview is an important opportunity to showcase your skills, experience, and passion. However, preparing for an interview can be a daunting task.

Once you've landed an interview, it's essential to prepare thoroughly. Research the company, practice your responses to common interview questions, and make sure you dress appropriately for the job.

No matter if it is an in person interview or via video, make sure you are ready 15 mins prior so you do not keep your potential employer waiting. First impressions count and turning up late to your first interaction isn't a good look.

Finally, remember to be yourself during the interview. Don't try to be someone you're not, as this can come across as insincere. Instead, focus on showcasing your passion for the field and your enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with the studio.

5.Follow up

Either after the interview or after you have applied, don't forget to follow up with a thank you note or email. This shows that you're genuinely interested in the job and can help keep you top of mind for the hiring manager.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of landing your dream job in 2023. Remember to stay focused, stay positive, and keep your eye on the prize. With hard work and determination, you can achieve your career goals and find the job of your dreams!
