This residence has been created with the intention of celebrating the relationship between the harbour and the bushland; a contrast which supplies breathtaking views around the home. Designed to accommodate a family with a flair for entertaining, there are several spots around the residence for all manner of gatherings - the upper terrace on the entry level is great for sunset drinks, with its 360-degree views of the water and mirrored hillside. The main level kitchen is suited to larger dinner parties and formal meals, with sleek yet warm timber joinery and an open plan design that provides space for connection and conversation. On the other hand, the lower-level pool and entertaining space – complete with a pool table – is perfect for letting loose and throwing a party that guests will remember – marked by its sweeping harbour views, lush green vegetation and a large tiled pool.

The design process saw the renovation and revitalisation of a previous dwelling, where the materials on show were comprised primary of dull grey brick and concrete. Utilising a new palette of black steel, sandstone, warm timber and fresh pops of white, the homes frontage is transformed into a contemporary and invigorating harbourside-retreat. Castlepeake Architects employed the use of repeated horizontal lines across the home's levels to break up the façade and ground the building within its landscape. Sandstone cladding runs through the centre of the home, naturally leading the eye towards the panoramic harbour views.

In the spirit of renovation and restoration, the home's original staircase was retained and revitalised, breathing a sense of modernity into the space whilst retaining history and character of the original structure. The spiral of the staircase is repeated throughout the home’s floors, reinforcing the motif of pattern and symmetry created in the façade. Skylights were added to introduce natural lighting and ventilation into the space helping to highlight the refined and subtle nature of the homes fresh and airy materials palette. Fluid and curved design elements such as the spiral staircase and rounded timber joinery are employed around the home to seamlessly blend new and old.

Externally, a private jetty and lush gardens emphasise the home's connection to its setting, specifically the harbour and the lifestyle it offers to the home’s residents. Winding paths trace throughout the harbourside garden, encouraging movement throughout the scenery and connection to the waterside backdrop.

Sailors Bay by Castlepeake Architects is a design centred around lifestyle. In the highly coveted northern suburbs of Sydney, this home creates an indelible connection to its landscape and works to highlight the relationship between location and life.
