Little Albion, with its distinct character and contemporary modern Australian design, has earned its reputation as a home with a truly unique aesthetic. Situated on a relatively small 312m2 lot in the picturesque beachside suburb of Cottesloe, Little Albion stands out amidst the timeless charm of the old 1900's cottages that dominate the area.

The clients approached Stack Design to create a new home to replace the existing cottage they originally used as a home away from home when their children were at boarding school many years ago. The goal was to create a modern and stylish retirement residence that would better suit their lifestyle and provide ample space for entertaining neighbours, family, and friends.

With a vision of open-plan living and bringing the outside in, the design of Little Albion aimed to create a bright, light-filled space that encourages interaction among its residents, as well as seamlessly integrating the surrounding nature.
The main living space opens entirely to absorb the central courtyard, subtly recreating the sense of space the family is used to on their farm, surrounded by nature.

The design of Little Albion achieves an eloquent balance between privacy and a valued connection to the street, with timber battened doors expanding the courtyard into the carport and out to the street. This thoughtful design element allows for seamless integration with the neighbourhood, while maintaining privacy when desired.

One of the remarkable achievements of Little Albion is the reduction of 80% in power costs compared to a typical new home, without compromising on the home's design. It provides a naturally comfortable living space, prioritising sustainability and energy efficiency.

The design of Little Albion thoughtfully combines off-form concrete walls and ceilings with the warmth of natural Australian Blackbutt timber and Silvertop Ash timber cladding, resulting in a unique and inviting aesthetic. The goal was to create a home that not only meets the functional needs of the clients, but also reflects their vision for a modern and stylish retirement residence by the beach, full of texture, light, and functionality, in contrast to the old cottage.

The clients of Little Albion express their satisfaction with the project, praising Kyle and the Stack Team for their understanding of their vision and bringing it to life. The clients appreciate the practical concept of the home as a retirement residence and a place to eventually settle down.

"He immediately understood our vision coming up with a practical concept as a home away from the family farm that will eventually become our forever home and a place to retire."

Little Albion, is a shining example of a home that redefines country living in the city. Its bright and vibrant design, open-plan layout, seamless integration with nature, and sustainable features make it a truly unique and inviting space for the farming family to retire and entertain their loved ones. The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Stack Design, Litehouse Building, Reed Engineers, Northern Aspect Energy, Shepardcraft Cabinetry and TJP Carpentry, who brought their vision and expertise to create a functional and beautiful home that surpasses expectations.
