Designing an interior is as much about feeling as it is function. With so many decisions to make, thoughtful inspiration from experienced designers can help shape spaces that are both beautiful and liveable.

Throughout 2025, CO-architecture shared standout house interiors from studios across Australia. These were the projects our audience returned to most, reflecting the materials, moods and spatial ideas shaping contemporary interiors today and offering inspiration for the year ahead.

Carlton Laneway House is both an extension to an existing terrace and a new small-footprint home, carefully placed at the rear of the site against a bluestone laneway. Instead of enlarging the existing footprint, MRTN Architects strategically positioned the additional volume to maximise usable space, natural light, and privacy. The result is a clever and contemporary response to inner-city living that makes every square metre count.

Balancing retreat and connection in a tropical setting. Kent transforms a classic 1925 Queenslander into a layered home that offers both refuge and openness. The design by Alexandra Buchanan Architecture honours the character of the original cottage while introducing a warm, contemporary addition, blending natural materials, earthy tones, and tactile finishes inspired by the tropics. The result is a private sanctuary that stays open to light, breezes, and the rhythms of its sub-tropical surroundings.

A country retreat shaped by land, views, and life on Bruny Island. Coopworth is a contemporary interpretation of the farmhouse, designed by FMD Architects to sit gently within Tasmania’s rural surrounds. The home speaks with its ever-changing landscape, framing views of water and mountain ranges, drawing inspiration from the weathered red lead shacks scattered across the island, and sharing its name with the Coopworth sheep who inhabit the site.
