Founded in 2014 and rebranded in 2022 as alt. Artefact, with a renewed focus on supporting local fabrication and sustainable production practices, the studio embodies a commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Kate Steele, co-founder and sole director of alt. Artefact, is an accomplished industrial designer with over a decade of experience in lighting product design. Her design philosophy is rooted in the seamless integration of elegant forms and materiality, creating designs that become essential elements of the spaces they inhabit, enhancing both function and atmosphere.
Alt. Artefact's design ethos is built on considered functionality, refined simplicity, and environmental responsibility. The studio is dedicated to designing lighting that enhances well-being for people and the environment across various settings, including residences. By offering standard and bespoke products tailored to individual spaces, with custom finishes and sizing requirements, alt. Artefact ensures that each piece is consciously designed for serviceability and durability. Working closely with their trusted local supply chain, the studio ensures they meet the highest ethical and sustainable standards.
Introduced in 2018, the Globe Wall Light collection has been featured in a variety of residential settings, from well styled living spaces to refined powder rooms. The Globe Disc Wall Light is a standout design in this collection, offering a round 250mm plate-shaped wall fixture that has been popular with Australian designers. Another key design in the range is the Globe Tube Wall Light, a modern, minimalist fixture that combines the functionality of lighting with the aesthetic appeal of wall art, creating a unique fusion of form and function.
The finishes range has recently been expanded to include aged brass and rough stainless steel, in addition to the original options of brushed brass, black gloss powder coat, and shoji white satin powder coat. Alt. Artefact has continuously refined its product development to highlight the natural characteristics of the metals they work with, and these two new finishes are a testament to that dedication. Both designs feature a globe diffuser constructed from solid perspex, making them virtually indestructible and imbuing the LED light source with a depth and clarity not seen in typical light globes.
Showcased through the Globe Wall Light Collection is a high standard of materiality and a commitment to creating beautifully designed, high-quality products. Alt. Artefact pays careful attention to detail while expressing an honesty of form, material, and finish. Focused on local craftsmanship, each piece is a uniquely beautiful Australian artefact, designed and made in Melbourne, Australia. Specified in high-end residential projects across Australia, alt. Artefact's work exemplifies a strong commitment to the future of Australian design.
