Almost hidden amongst the white dunes of the iconic 9 Mile Beach, is Studio Tasmania, tucked away in the foliage, exactly as intended. This beachfront retreat designed by Matt Williams Architects frames the wilderness of the coastline and incomparable views of the Aurora Australis, in an act of reverence to the natural beauty of the Tasmania's wilderness.

Studio Tasmania is quietly nestled amongst the pristine shores of Dolphin Sands, framing some of the most stunning coastline in the country and promising retreat to the otherworldly relaxation of Tasmania's natural landscapes. Revered for not only its incredible location, the holiday home has been recognised for its visionary design.

The retreat was initially conceived as a cinematic viewfinder, and as a result offers uninterrupted views across Great Oyster Bay to Freycinet Peninsula. Guests can drink in the panoramic views of endless ocean from inside the retreat and witness the awe-inspiring Aurora Australis from the homes expansive deck. Large, uninterrupted vistas blur the divides between inside and out, creating the sensation that you are immersed within the wild, rugged landscape. A sophisticated and elevated interior creates a soothing, calming sensation as a limited but richly-textured material palette adds warmth and intrigue to the space.

The retreat's design celebrates design and the landscape in equal measure, allowing the built environment to demonstrate its respect for the natural landscape through a range of careful and considered architectural choices. The  construction of Studio Tasmania was informed largely by a decision to minimise the disturbance to the sight and maintain the dominance of the landscape, such as the Surefoot footing system which elevates the structure, allowing fauna to move freely around the landscape without damaging dune structure or requiring concrete. Additionally, the structure was inspired by the typography of a tent - standing resolute against harsh conditions, offering security shelter and warmth whilst maintaining immediacy to the natural surrounds.

The promise of isolation is one of the most enticing aspects of a stay at Studio Tasmania, allowing guests to totally immerse themselves in a truly relaxing disconnect from everyday life. The holiday home is accessed via a pathway that mirrors the natural curvature of the site, wrapping around the contours of the dunes to echo the natural sense of separation and privacy afforded by 9 Mile Beach. The journey to the holiday retreat is one of shedding; peeling away layers of chaos and responsibility to plunge into a peaceful and calming escape.

When staying at the studio, you’ll be greeted by curious wallabies, possums wandering across the deck at night, and if you’re lucky, the ever-elusive echidna making a rare appearance. Studio Tasmania's seclusion from the urban landscape is so prominent that area is virtually unaffected by light pollution, meaning on a clear, moonless night guests can sit on the deck and clearly see the Milky Way overhead.

Although the Studio promises a distinctly isolated and relaxing holiday stay, the holiday home balances the natural ruggedness of the location with opulent interior design and modern luxuries. An outdoor shower, sundeck, BBQ and standard conveniences such as air conditioning and dishwasher demonstrate the thoughtfulness and well-rounded design of Studio Tasmania. In this way, the stay is a destination holiday of its own, showing the unmatched luxury and relaxation possible through considered and careful architectural and interior design.
