Forrest Haus is the perfect family retreat for all manner of guests: slow down, breathe in the fresh scenic air, bond around the fire pit and take in the native wildlife. The spacious three-bedroom retreat is nestled in the quiet region of Victoria between the Otways Hinterland and Great Ocean Road, in the charming town of Forrest.

Purpose built by owners and designers Lisa and Matt, to welcome and inspire guests, the design of the retreat is inspired by barn chalets, with considerable intention placed upon making a space that was warm, welcoming and aware of the needs of its guests. The design process included time to carefully select makers, artists, designers and businesses who worked together with Lisa and Matt to create a space that is relaxing, explorative and inspiring.

The space is light and airy, prioritising lighting through large windows which double to provide incredible framed views of the lush surrounds. Designer lighting fixtures from David Trubridge, Nick Rennie, and Slide Design enhance functionality, ambience, and luxury, bathing the residence in a warm glow at night. The home mimics its surrounds, combining timber with stone and neutral finishes to create a palette that is soothing and calm.

The retreat features high ceilings which add to a sense of quiet luxury, aided by a rich indoor wood fire in the centre of the space, which not only offers warmth but a cosy, relaxing vibe for guests to enjoy during the stays in the colder months. The home also offers an external fire pit; the perfect spot for guests wanting to snuggle under a blanket, toast some marshmallows and enjoy conversations with their loved ones under the stars.

The surrounding landscape is home to a wide variety of native wildlife, including birds who regularly visit the home's gardens and can be seen throughout the rainforest. The space has been specifically designed so that each window provides guests with views of a variety of different plants, designed in collaboration with Otway Greening to ensure the planting of indigenous species as well as a dedicated bushfood area in the garden. The entire retreat is sustainably designed, minimising its footprint on the natural environment and encouraging guests to do the same during their stay.
