Fernhurst by ANGLE
Located in Studley Park in Kew, Fernhurst is one of the last remaining apartment development sites due to zoning and heritage restrictions. Comprising just seventeen apartments and three homes on a one-acre north-east corner site, the project is set to launch in September 2024. Fernhurst is a low-density development characterised by generous setbacks and expansive gardens, brought to life by ANGLE in collaboration with Edition Office and Eckersley Garden Architecture.
ANGLE’S design philosophy is centred around creating spaces for people to live, by drawing inspiration from the past. Bringing a fresh perspective and a unique approach, each project is thoughtfully designed to be both liveable and as distinctive as the properties and their inhabitants.
Fernhurst is ANGLE’s most extensively landscaped development, characterised by generous setbacks and expansive gardens. Working closely with Eckersley Garden Architecture, the project creates a thriving, secluded garden experience that seamlessly blends into the surrounding ecology of Studley Park, harmonising with the natural landscape.
Well-known Melbourne Architects, Edition Office have designed each apartment individually with a focus on liveability and daily transitions, all connected to a vast central atrium that enhances openness and community. Flooded with natural light, the spacious, open-plan living areas extend seamlessly onto private, secure, low-maintenance outdoor spaces. Framed by a brick façade, these areas provide a sense of security while offering a striking contrast to the lush greenery.
The renovation and extension of the existing heritage home preserves the unique character of the houses while opening the living spaces onto a private, north-facing courtyard. Delicate interventions reimagine the fine grain of the original interiors, enhancing the volume of the spaces. A layered landscape wraps around the house, cohesively integrating the private entertaining area and courtyard with the existing structure. The addition of a fully enclosed outdoor kitchenette further elevates the space, creating a garden oasis for year-round enjoyment.
Two separate homes carry forward the design intent, using materials similar to the apartments while establishing their own distinct architectural identity. These homes are united by the goal of creating connectivity between the living spaces and private gardens, resulting in richly landscaped, north-facing walled courtyards that serve as a stunning prelude to the large, established trees of Stawell Street.
With a warm and tactile material palette, each component is thoughtfully curated from a diverse selection of artisans, manufacturers, and suppliers. This includes handcrafted bricks from the Australian family-owned Krause Bricks, wardrobes by the innovative Italian brand Molteni&C, German-made appliances from Gaggenau, and tapware from Australia's industry leader, Brodware.
Fernhurst’s refined design highlights the advantages of merging architecture with the natural environment, striking a balance that effortlessly dissolves the boundaries between built form and landscape. With its carefully curated materials, innovative layout, and cohesive integration into the surrounding landscape of Studley Park, this development offers a rare opportunity to experience a truly unique and liveable space. As ANGLE continues to push the boundaries of residential design, Fernhurst exemplifies their commitment to creating environments that not only meet the needs of their residents but also enhance the beauty and character of the community for years to come.
