Talking Careers with CJH Studio

Words by Cassie James-Herrick from CJH Studio

Why did you choose interior design as a career?

It was a passion that ran deep from when I was younger, my father was a builder and grandfather was a builder/furniture maker so I have been around a job site in one way or another my whole life. I used to often admire watching my dad hand draft in his office and wanted to be able to do that too.

Where was your first interior design job?

Beatrix Rowe Interior Design and I gained intern/work experience at Hecker (Phelan at the time) Guthrie on multiple occasions.

Best piece of advice you could give to job seekers who are currently looking / applying for roles?

Just to be clear and concise, and provide a snapshot of all important information to make the process clearer for potential employers, and so not too much to go through. Even their location in my case is helpful. Selecting some work to show that is most relevant to the position and the firm if possible. A more personalised covering email body is also nice if a little more informal about the applicant and what they are aiming for and their passions etc is nice rather so a more personal touch in addition to the more formal info on a cv/portfolio.

The biggest mistake you see applicants make with their job applications?

Not providing all information, or too much of what isn't required. Also having copy paste with incorrectly addressed names in emails, it doesn’t take much effort to find the right contact or person to address in most cases. Even a quick call or email heads up to the firm asking who is the best person to address to and personalise the first contact from there where possible.
