Roam Merrijig

Roam Merrijig is a luxury accommodation located in the foothills of Mount Buller, Victoria. Inspired by a love for snow and mountains, this getaway was created in 2020 by founder Yuen Coleman in collaboration with PreBuilt and Pleysier Perkins Architects. The intention was to create a soulful and thoughtfully designed space, encouraging travellers to tap into their inner explorer and experience the transformative power of nature.

Inspired by black A-frame barns and locations like Queenstown, as well as their experiences in European and Japanese resorts, the Merrijig getaway was collaboratively modernised by Pleysier Perkins into a two-storey interpretation of the 'barn' with a pitched roof. The design retains the project's initial vision while adapting to the land's characteristics.

Despite the challenges of lockdowns, building in a bushfire-prone and snowy area, and rising building costs, the vision of Roam Merrijig came to life in collaboration with the builder PreBuilt. The construction was prefabricated offsite and completed within 10 weeks. Following Yuen’s hero, Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy that "form and function are one," the spaces were designed to be beautiful yet functional.

The thoughtfully designed two-storey layout, features communal living spaces situated on the ground floor and private bedrooms and bathrooms located on the upper level. A beautiful laundry area / mud room, located at the entrance, accommodates large groups of ski equipment and garments while offering views of the valley, ensuring functionality without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.

Entering into a spacious living area, which includes dining and lounge spaces, explorers are encouraged to share stories and relax after a day of adventure. Large floor-to-ceiling windows immerse visitors in panoramic views of the mountains and valley, maintaining a deep connection to nature throughout their entire stay.

The bathroom features a bathtub that invites guests to soak and gaze at the stars through the skylight. A deck featuring a pool invites outdoor dining and provides a perfect setting for watching the sunset with a glass of wine. Merging into breathtaking mountain and valley views - the retreat epitomises the concept of ‘quiet luxury’.

With the slogan "carry the spirit of an adventurer and we’ll take care of the rest," Roam Merrijig aims to eliminate as many barriers as possible, making adventure-based activities more accessible. By partnering with local luxury transfer services like Double Black Alpine and hiking guides such as High Country Hiking Tours, Roam Merrijig intends to enhance the guest experience by creating exceptional and experiential travel opportunities.
