Billy's Hideaway by Huch
The journey to Wollombi offered a picturesque drive, winding through tranquil villages such as Bucketty and Laguna. These quaint rural towns, where roadside fruit and vegetable stalls replace large supermarkets, and wide ranging fruit and horticultural filled landscapes, offer glimpses of Yengo National Park beyond. The serene approach to Billy's Hideaway sets the tone for the experience that awaits at Huch's luxurious off-grid cabin—a tranquil retreat where you can disconnect from the world and reconnect with the natural surroundings.
Nestled within its natural surroundings on a peaceful site where not another human or building is in sight, the modern cabin exudes a sense of serenity. As you step inside and gracefully open both sets of expansive glass sliding doors, the cabin transforms into a space where one can simply sit and immerse yourself in the beauty of the surrounding nature. This carefully crafted design, by Sydney architect Madeleine Blanchfield Architects, fully embodies its intended purpose—to provide urban dwellers with a sanctuary for escape, recharge, rest, and relaxation. The integration of the cabin into its environment and the thoughtful design elements create an inviting atmosphere that encourages a profound connection with the outdoors, allowing guests to unwind and find solace in the tranquility that envelops them.
Within the confines of this cabin, the experience transcends the ordinary Australian camping trip. Imbued with a feeling of relaxed luxury, it boasts amenities that redefine the standard camping fare. A king-sized bed that gave us one of the better night sleeps we have had in a while. The fully equipped kitchenette stands ready to for any camping meal ideas, while a thoughtfully crafted bunk bed caters to children with a bespoke design. The bathroom, reminiscent of those found in designer hotels, elevates the overall experience with its sophisticated aesthetics and modern functionality. No long drop toilets in sight. Every element has been considered to provide a retreat that will make you re-think your next traditional camping experience.
Strategically positioned openings within the cabin act as viewing portals to the landscape outside, capturing vistas that seamlessly integrate the indoors with the natural world. The day we visited it was quite warm outside, but as soon as we opened both of the expansive glass sliding doors, a natural breezeway was formed, swiftly transforming the surroundings into a refreshingly cool environment.
The exterior of the cabin extends the indulgence, featuring a wood-fired hot tub that, on the summer day we enjoyed, doubled as a refreshing plunge pool. The deck hosts a Heston Blumenthal BBQ, providing an ideal spot for the morning bacon and egg rolls with the kangaroos playfully boxing in the distance providing the entertainment. As the night falls, the outdoor fire-pit becomes the perfect location for crafting s'mores while gazing up at the clear night sky that Wollombi nights generously offer.
For those seeking a remote office for a temporary work escape, Billy's Hideaway is the perfect solution. Thanks to the addition of a Starlink connection, the cabin enjoys high-speed WiFi, transforming it into a dream location for remote work. Alternatively, for those yearning for a tech-detox, you have the option to power down all devices and embrace a more traditional approach—lose yourself in a paperback while surrounded by the sounds of wildlife.
Heading out to explore the neighbouring villages, there are many options for the adventurous traveler. Just down the road lies the historic town of Wollombi, adorned with a local providore and the iconic Wollombi Tavern—an oasis for us to enjoy a cold beer. Built in 1868 and formerly known as the Wollombi Wine Saloon, stepping through its doors feels akin to entering the set of an old Western movie, instantly immersing yourself in a bygone era.
Other local highlights are Trading Post Laguna, offering a place for good food, wine and music. Situated in the Hunter region, you're also in close proximity to numerous wineries if a day of wine tasting appeals to you. Alternatively, consider booking a Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experience to delve into the rich traditional history of the land led by local elders.
